Athletics Kenya cancels African Games trials in tribute to Kelvin Kiptum

Athletics Kenya says the cancellation is in honour of World Marathon record holder who passed on recently in tragic road accident

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Kelvin Kiptum, Athletics Kenya has made the decision to cancel the Trials for the African Games, originally slated for the 16th and 17th of February 2024 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

"Athletics Kenya wishes to inform all athletes and the entire athletics fraternity that the Trials for African Games which were scheduled to take place on 16th and 17th February 2024 at the Nyayo National Stadium have been cancelled in honour of the late Kelvin Kiptum," a statement from Athletics Kenya read in part.

The decision reflects the deep sense of loss felt within the athletics community following the passing of Kiptum. His legacy as a promising athlete and a beloved member of the community has left an indelible mark.

Kelvin Kiptum, a rising star in the athletics world, tragically passed away recently in a road accident.

Despite the cancellation of the Trials, Athletics Kenya has assured athletes and the athletics fraternity that the selection process for the team that will represent the country at the African Games will proceed. The games are scheduled to be held from the 18th to the 22nd of March 2024 in Accra, Ghana.
