From hygiene to safety: Why showering without slippers is a habit to break

Dr Kamau advocates for shower slippers, non-slip, water-resistant footwear designed to protect your feet from both infections and physical injuries.

Imagine this: you are stepping into a warm, steamy shower after a long day. The water cascades down, and you let out a sigh of relief. It feels so good, doesn’t it?

But as your feet make contact with the slick surface of the shower floor, there is an almost imperceptible feeling that you have just put your health at risk.

Sure, it is easy to forget, but a podiatrist would tell you that showering without slippers or flipflops on is a big no-no.

Dr Mary Kamau, a seasoned podiatrist who has seen it all, has treated hundreds of patients whose feet have suffered from the seemingly harmless practice of showering without slippers.

She explained to The Eastleigh Voice that the shower, a place meant for relaxation and rejuvenation, can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and even physical injuries, especially if you are not wearing the right footwear.

“Many people think it's no big deal to walk barefoot in the shower,” Kamau says.

“But that’s where the trouble begins. Shower floors, whether in public gyms, hotels, or even at home, can be a haven for dangerous microorganisms. Fungi like athlete's foot can thrive in these damp environments, and walking barefoot gives them easy access to your skin.”

Kamau emphasises that the most common issue she encounters is fungal infections.

“When your feet are constantly in contact with wet, warm surfaces, the skin can soften, making it more susceptible to infection. A tiny crack or cut that you might not even notice could be an open invitation for bacteria or fungi to enter your body.”

But it is not just fungi you need to worry about. Kamau also highlights the risk of slipping.

“The shower is one of the most slippery places in the house. Without proper footwear, you are at risk of injuring your feet, ankles, or even worse, your back. A simple slip can lead to a sprained ankle or worse, a fall that could land you in the emergency room.”

The dangers are not just about your feet, they are about your entire body.

“Many people don’t realise that if they slip in the shower, they may try to catch themselves on the edge of the bathtub, the door, or the toilet bowl, which could lead to strains or sprains in other parts of the body. In some cases, it can be a serious fall that results in broken bones.”

So, what is the solution?

Kamau advocates for shower slippers, non-slip, water-resistant footwear designed to protect your feet from both infections and physical injuries.

“A good pair of shower slippers can provide an extra layer of protection, keeping your feet safe from harmful bacteria and fungi that thrive on wet surfaces," she explains. "The sole is designed with patterns similar to a tire tread, offering superior traction and significantly reducing the risk of slipping.”

Shower slippers are not just about hygiene; they are about taking care of your body.

Kamau notes that many people, especially those with certain foot conditions like diabetes or weakened immune systems, are more vulnerable to infections.

“If you have open cuts, blisters, or even calluses, going barefoot in the shower can lead to severe complications. Shower slippers are a simple and effective way to safeguard your health.”

Kamau’s advice is clear: next time you step into the shower, think twice about going barefoot. Slip on a pair of waterproofs, non-slip slippers designed for the job, and your feet will thank you.
