KNEC announces July, August deadlines for 2025 CBC assessments

Schools have been instructed to administer the tasks and ensure the scores for all learners are uploaded within the stipulated timelines.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released key dates for the 2025 school-based projects and performance tasks for Grades 3, 7, 8, stage-based learners, and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) candidates.
In a notice on Monday, KNEC said schools must administer the tasks and upload scores to the CBA portal by July 31 for Grades 3, 7, 8 and stage-based learners, and by August 30 for KJSEA candidates.

“The projects and performance tasks for Grades 3, 7 and 8, stage-based pathway, and KJSEA have been uploaded on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal (https://cba.knec.ac.ke) for access by schools,” the council said.
Schools have been instructed to administer the tasks and ensure the scores for all learners are uploaded within the stipulated timelines. KNEC said teachers will assess the learners using official guidelines provided by the council.
“Schools are expected to administer the projects and performance tasks and upload scores of all learners on the portal within stipulated timeframes as follows: Grades 3, 7 & 8 and stage-based pathway by July 31, 2025, and KJSEA projects by August 30, 2025,” KNEC said.
The council further cautioned that failure to meet the deadlines, especially for the KJSEA scores, would result in financial penalties.
“A penalty of Sh500 per candidate will be imposed for any KJSEA project uploads made after the specified date,” read the notice.
Headteachers are also required to maintain records and retain evidence generated from the project assessments for accountability and future reference.
The materials required for the assessments should be obtained from the immediate school environment or improvised as much as possible," KNEC said.
KJSEA is the national examination introduced as part of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to assess learners at the end of Grade 9, marking their transition from junior school to senior school.
More than 1.2 million Grade 9 learners are expected to sit for the KJSEA in November ahead of their transition to senior school next year.
