Nairobi residents to experience water disruption due to Friday's power outage

Residents in several areas of Nairobi County will experience water supply disruptions following a power outage that struck the country on Friday, August 30, 2024.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has announced that the blackout caused a critical transformer at the Gigiri Pumping Station to malfunction.

The Company Managing Director said since Saturday, Kenya Power engineers have been on-site working to address the issue.

"On Friday, 30 August 2024, from 9:00 PM, Nairobi City County, along with the rest of the country, experienced a power outage. When power was restored at 5:30 AM, our 5MVA 66/3.3kVA transformer at Gigiri Pumping Station failed to energize. As this is highly specialised equipment, we have sought technical assistance from Kenya Power and Lighting Company for fault diagnosis," the company's managing director said.

"Due to this, we are currently unable to pump water from the Gigiri reservoir to the Kabete reservoir, which is crucial for augmenting water supply from Sasumua and Ruiru dams."

Affected areas

As a result, the company said the following areas will experience water supply disruptions or low pressures. The areas include; Limuru Road Areas: Parklands, Ngara, Aga Khan Hospital, University of Nairobi - School of Law, City Park Area, Gigiri, United Nations - Gigiri, New Muthaiga, Nyali, and Red Hill.

Others include Naivasha and Kikuyu Roads Areas: Kawangware, Riruta/Satellite, Uthiru, and Ndwaru Road.

Also affected will be James Gichuru, Lang’ata, and Waiyaki Ways Areas: Riverside, Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, and Kileleshwa, Lang'ata Road Estates: Madaraka, Karen, Lang'ata, Kibra, and parts of South C Estates.

Customers in the affected areas have been urged to be patient and to use available water sparingly while repairs are underway.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working diligently to restore normalcy as quickly as possible," the company said.
