Ruto appoints former Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani to lead NTSA board

Through the same Gazette Notice, Ruto revoked the appointment of Timothy Bosire, who had previously been assigned the role.

Former Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Abdallah Mwashetani has been appointed the non-executive chairperson of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Board of Directors.

His appointment, announced through a gazette notice, takes effect from March 28 and will run for three years.

President William Ruto made the decision in accordance with section 6 (1) (a) of the National Transport and Safety Authority Act and section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

Through the same notice, Ruto revoked the appointment of Timothy Bosire, who had previously been assigned the role.

Mwashetani’s appointment follows a series of changes in the NTSA leadership.

Bosire, who serves as the ODM National Treasurer and formerly represented Kitutu Masaba in Parliament, was initially appointed on January 17, 2025, replacing Manoj Shah. However, he later declined the position.

“After consultation with a section of the leadership, my family and friends, I have come to the conclusion that I must decline this appointment. I thank the appointing authority, His Excellency President William Ruto, for his consideration,” Bosire stated.

Mwashetani, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), previously served two terms as Lunga Lunga MP before losing his seat in the 2022 elections.

He was first elected in 2013 on a Ford-Kenya ticket and secured re-election in 2017 under the Jubilee Party.

However, in 2022, he was defeated by Mangale Chiforomodo of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), a party affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Lunga Lunga constituency, situated in Kwale County, was established in 2013 after being carved out from Msambweni.

In the 2022 elections, ten candidates vied for the parliamentary seat, making the race highly competitive.

Mwashetani’s appointment to NTSA adds to the growing list of political figures receiving key government positions following the last general elections.
