Impersonating a doctor could cost you Sh5 million – Council

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has raised alarm over the increasing number of individuals falsely presenting themselves as medical professionals, particularly on online platforms.

The council on Thursday warned that impersonating a doctor or offering medical services without proper qualifications is a serious offence that carries hefty penalties.

According to KMPDC CEO David Kariuki, individuals found guilty of unlawfully using the title "Doctor" (Dr.) in a medical or dental capacity without proper registration or qualifications risk a fine of up to Sh5 million, a prison sentence of up to five years, or both.

"These 'doctors' pose a serious risk to public health, as their advice and treatment are often based on unverified or outdated information, leading to misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, or worsening of health conditions," Kariuki stated.

Under Section 22 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (CAP 253), only registered medical practitioners, dentists, or individuals with doctoral qualifications are legally allowed to use the title "Doctor."

The law also prohibits unqualified individuals from offering medical or dental services while using the title.

KMPDC has urged the public to verify the legitimacy of doctors and health facilities before seeking medical services.

• To verify a doctor: P#Full Name of Practitioner or P#Registration Number

• To verify a health facility: H# Full Name of Facility or Registration Number

Journalists and publishers have also been urged to use these verification tools to prevent the spread of misinformation and protect public health.
