Dry spell looms over most parts of the country as rain subsides

In its weekly outlook covering April 29 to May 5, the department said that sunny conditions will dominate most parts of the country, with high temperatures during the day and cooler nights in selected areas.

Most regions in Kenya will experience reduced rainfall over the next seven days, with only a few areas expected to receive light showers, according to a new weather forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

In its weekly outlook covering April 29 to May 5, the department said that sunny conditions will dominate most parts of the country, with high temperatures during the day and cooler nights in selected areas.

“Average daytime (maximum) temperatures above 30°C will prevail in the Coast, North-eastern, North-western Kenya, isolated areas of Western Kenya, and the South-eastern lowlands,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the area around Mt. Kilimanjaro will experience cold nights.

“Average night-time (minimum) temperatures below 10°C are expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and around Mt. Kilimanjaro,” the department noted.

Sunny intervals are expected in coastal regions, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal areas of Tana River County.

These areas are not expected to receive a lot of rainfall during the forecast period.

Similarly, the South-eastern lowlands covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta Counties, as well as the inland sections of Tana River County, will have mainly sunny days.

There remains a possibility of light rain in some areas during the morning, afternoon, or night.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, mornings will be mostly cloudy with chances of light rains in a few places.

These conditions are expected to clear by mid-morning, giving way to sunny intervals.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the wider Rift Valley region will also begin the day with sunny conditions.

Counties in this zone include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.

Although mornings are likely to be dry in these western areas, the afternoons and nights could bring showers and thunderstorms in a few places. These weather conditions may spread to more areas occasionally.

In North-western Kenya, covering Turkana and Samburu Counties, the days are expected to remain sunny while nights will be partly cloudy. There is still a possibility of rain at different times of the day.

“However, there is a possibility of morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers occurring over a few places,” the department said.

As most parts of the country transition into drier days with scattered showers, residents are advised to remain alert to changing local weather conditions.
