Brace for rain, chilly nights and scorching days- met department

Morning rainfall is expected in parts of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms will follow in most of these areas, marking a consistent pattern throughout the forecast period.

Kenyans have been advised to prepare for changing weather conditions starting this weekend, with a mix of rainfall, cold nights, and high daytime temperatures expected in different parts of the country.

The latest five-day forecast released by the Kenya Meteorological Department points to active weather patterns from Friday, May 2, to Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

According to David Gikungu, Director General of the Kenya Met Department, moderate rains are likely across various regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the South Eastern Lowlands, Western Kenya, and the Coastal region.

In Western and Rift Valley counties such as Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu, residents have also been told to expect rainfall.

Other areas with a similar weather outlook include West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.

Gikungu stated that these regions will likely begin their days with sunshine before experiencing showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night.

The agency highlighted that this pattern may disrupt outdoor activities and advised the public to take precautions.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal sections of Tana River County will receive heavy rainfall during the weekend.

Gikungu mentioned these areas would see increased rainfall activity as the long rains reach their peak.

He also emphasised that May is the month when the long rainy season usually reaches its highest point, adding that people should be cautious of waterborne diseases during this time.

Beyond the rainfall, the forecast has shown a sharp contrast in temperatures between regions. Gikungu pointed out that areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley would record very low night temperatures.

Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi are all expected to experience night-time lows of up to 10°C.

At the same time, some areas are bracing for scorching daytime heat. The forecast shows that parts of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya, as well as select counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, will record temperatures of at least 30°C during the day.

The Kenya Met Department urged residents to stay updated with the forecast and take safety measures to deal with the varying weather conditions during the weekend and into early next week.
