Suspect in Kasipul MP murder Philip Aroko released on Sh300,000 bail, barred from Homa Bay

As part of his bail conditions, Aroko is required to report regularly to investigating officers and to provide any evidence needed in connection with the case.

Homa Bay politician Philip Aroko, who is a suspect in the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were, has been released on a Sh300,000 bail by the JKIA court.

When the matter came for mention on Friday, JKIA Law Courts Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi imposed several conditions on Aroko’s release.

Aroko had appeared in court after completing seven days in custody pending investigations.

While granting bail, the magistrate ordered Aroko to deposit his passport with the court. He was also restrained from travelling to Homa Bay, the home county of the late MP.

"In granting you bail, I give orders restricting you from contacting family members, other suspects, or any individuals associated with the case," the magistrate ruled.

The court also directed that Aroko refrain from interfering with any evidence that could be critical to the ongoing investigation.

As part of his bail conditions, Aroko is required to report regularly to investigating officers and to provide any evidence needed in connection with the case.

The prosecution had initially requested that Aroko remain in custody, citing the high public interest of the case and the need for further investigation.

"We've heard the respondent… he has been cooperating, but we're investigating the death of a deceased, and this case is of public interest. It is essential that he is detained for seven days to help us determine his level of involvement. We will either bring charges or request his release after this period," the prosecution argued.

But the magistrate dismissed their application and granted Aroko bail.

Aroko was detained last Friday for seven days after police sought 30 days to investigate him in the murder.

The case will be mentioned on June 3.
