Court proceedings at the Bungoma Law Courts were briefly disrupted on Thursday morning after a firearm accidentally discharged inside a High Court courtroom, leaving five people injured.

The incident happened at about 10:50 am during the hearing of a criminal case.

A statement from the Judiciary indicated that the firearm, belonging to a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer, discharged unexpectedly.

The officer himself was injured, along with a Kenya Prisons officer and three civilians who were present in court.

All five victims were rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed they were in stable condition.

No fatalities or life-threatening injuries were reported.

Judiciary spokesperson Paul Ndemi reassured members of the public that all other court staff and attendees were unharmed. He called for calm, stressing that the incident was under control.

"The County security team has already visited the court premises and is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting," Ndemi said, adding that updates would be shared as investigations progress.

Court sessions resumed shortly after police and county security officers secured the scene.
