Detectives comb Kyalo Mbobu’s office for clues to his killing ahead of today's burial

Investigators have set up operations at the office of slain lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi, examining files and records they believe could reveal the motive behind his killing.

This is as the family prepares to bury him today (Wednesday) at his home in Mua, Machakos County, following a memorial service at St John’s Catholic Church in Karen.

On Tuesday, the homicide unit stated that the documents may hold critical evidence, and detectives spent hours reviewing papers alongside their staff.

More than 15 people have been questioned so far, including colleagues, office employees, boda boda riders at the scene, and clients from banks where Mbobu had accounts.

Authorities are also investigating whether any of his financial transactions could be linked to the attack.

Mbobu, who once chaired the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting along Magadi Road on September 9.

He was hit at close range, suffering eight gunshot wounds to the neck and chest that left him with fatal spinal injuries.

The gunman, accompanied by a motorcycle rider, escaped immediately after firing, shooting into the air to intimidate bystanders.

Police acknowledged that the absence of working CCTV cameras along Lang’ata and Magadi roads has complicated the investigation.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, however, expressed confidence in the progress made.

“Because he is a lawyer, of course, the first thing that comes to mind is whether someone was exerting revenge or attacking him by virtue of his professional duties,” Murkomen said.

“The DCI has interviewed colleagues, family members and is reviewing various information.”

The CS noted the contrast with the killing of Kasipul MP Charles Were, where CCTV footage helped identify suspects. “It is not easy because the area where this incident happened had no CCTV cameras.”

Three individuals previously held as persons of interest have since been released, while the murder weapon remains missing. Detectives are examining other surveillance footage and tracking Mbobu’s movements to determine if he was being followed before the attack.

On the day of his death, Mbobu began with morning prayers at the Holy Family Basilica before arriving at his office.

At 11:05 am, he attended a lunch meeting at Sagret Hotel that lasted three hours, leaving after paying a Sh3,800 bill. Investigators are studying mobile phone records to identify all contacts before, during, and after the meeting.

He left his office at 5:09 pm, heading home, and was shot shortly afterwards.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, has instructed the Inspector General of Police to accelerate the investigation and submit a detailed report within seven days.

“The ODPP echoes the DCI’s appeal for members of the public with any relevant information to come forward and share it with law enforcement agencies without delay,” he said.
