These are the realities of life! Uhuru opens up on his health struggles

Uhuru Kenyatta described how the late Frank Ireri had been a pillar of support over the past year, particularly in moments of difficulty and uncertainty.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has shared personal reflections on his own health as he mourned the passing of his close friend and colleague, Frank Ireri.

Ireri, 63, passed away on October 26, 2025, at Nairobi Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for cancer, according to friends and family.

As the former Managing Director of the Housing Finance Company of Kenya, Ireri was widely respected for his contributions to expanding housing opportunities across the country.

The memorial service provided Uhuru with an opportunity to pay tribute to Ireri while subtly alluding to the personal health challenges he and some of his peers are facing.

During the emotional ceremony on Friday, Uhuru described Ireri as a pillar of support over the past year, especially during moments of hardship and uncertainty.

“In the last year and a good part of this year, whenever we met, he was very encouraging about some of the challenges we were going through. He had more experience than some of us and always guided us on how to face challenges in life, health, and otherwise,” Uhuru said.

Uhuru recalled how Ireri would comfort and reassure him and others, often holding their hands and reminding them that difficult times would eventually pass.

“I will miss that counsel. He held our hands and reminded us not to worry, that things would pass. He told us to trust in God and stay steady even in difficult times,” mourned the former president.

Reflecting on life, faith, and the inevitability of mortality, Uhuru acknowledged that those still grappling with health issues must continue their fight while trusting in God’s timing.

“Frank is lying here because it is his time. Those of us who still face our challenges will continue fighting, but when God’s time comes, we shall join him,  grateful for the life we lived and the moments we shared,” he said.

The former president also spoke of the lessons he drew from Ireri’s courage, emphasising the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

“It’s not good to talk about this, but it’s life. I’ve been sitting with him ( Frank) to learn how to deal with this situation. He has gone ahead; it’s we who are left with this condition to know how we’ll live with it, and may God help us. When our time comes, we’ll join him to rest,” he added.
