SRC announces salary increases for MPs and state officials, here are the changes

Only salaries for President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, who earn Sh1,443,750 and Sh1,227,188, respectively, will not be adjusted.

Kenyan Cabinet Secretaries, Governors, Senators, Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), and other top government officials are slated to receive a salary increase starting this month amid ongoing anti-government protests. 

This adjustment follows Gazette Notice No. 10346 issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on August 9, 2023.

The SRC's notice entails a review and establishment of remuneration and benefits for state officers within the executive arm of the national government as part of the Third Remuneration and Benefits Review Cycle spanning Financial Years 2021-2022, 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025.

"Monthly Remuneration Structure for State Officers in the Executive of the National Government to be implemented in the Financial Year 2024/2025, with effect from July 1, 2024," reads the gazette notice.

Only salaries for President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, who earn Sh1,443,750 and Sh1,227,188, respectively, will not be adjusted.

From the executive, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, all 22 Cabinet Secretaries, Attorney-General Justin Muturi, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, and Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau will have a salary increment of Sh33,000, hitting Sh990,000 each up from Sh957,000.

Meanwhile, the Principal Secretaries, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, and National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji will also get new salaries at Sh819,844, up from Sh792,519, which is a Sh27,325 increment.

Also, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director General Mohamed Amin and Deputy Inspector General (IG) Noor Gabow will see his salary increase from Sh652,742 to Sh684,233.

Parliament

In Parliament, the Speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate will see their salaries increase from Sh1,185,327 to Sh1,208,362. Their deputies will also receive a raise, with their salaries rising from Sh948,261 to Sh966,690.

Members of Parliament and Senators will now earn Sh739,600, up from Sh725,502.

Similarly, Leaders of the Majority and Minority in both houses, including Kimani Ichung'wah, Opiyo Wandayi, Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, and Stewart Madzayo, will receive an increment of Sh15,251 with their new salaries amounting to Sh800,019, up from Sh784,768.

Counties

County governments are also adjusting their officials' salaries, with all 47 governors set to earn Sh990,000, reflecting an increase of Sh33,000 from their previous salary of Sh957,000.

Deputy Governors will also see a raise, with their salaries increasing from Sh652,742 to Sh684,233.

Additionally, members of the Executive Committee (CECs) will now earn Sh422,526, up from their previous salary of Sh413,079.

The Controller of Budget and the Vice Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), who currently earn similar monthly salaries, will see their compensation increase from Sh792,519 to Sh819,844.

Similarly, Chairpersons of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), National Land Commission (NLC), Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA), Public Service Commission (PSC), Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), Teachers Service Commission (TSC), National Police Service Commission (NPSC), Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), and National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), whose salaries were previously Sh792,515, will now receive Sh819,844.

Non-members of Parliament serving in the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) will see their salaries raised to Sh698,600 from Sh674,000.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga Mulele, and a commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will also earn Sh819,844, up from Sh792,519.

Vice-chairpersons and members of the IEBC, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), National Lands Commission, Commission on Revenue Allocation, Public Service Commission, Salaries and Remuneration Commission, Teachers Service Commission, National Police Service Commission, Commission on Administrative Justice, and National Gender and Equality Commission will now earn Sh698,600, up from Sh674,000.

Commission Secretaries/CEOs serving in the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), CRA, PSC, TSC, IEBC, and NPSC, who previously earned Sh674,000 monthly, will now take home Sh698,600.

Commission Secretaries and CEOs in all other commissions designated as State Officers under Article 260 of the Constitution will earn a revised salary of Sh684,233.

The Data Protection Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait, who is currently earning Sh642,125, will see her salary adjusted to Sh674,900.

Meanwhile, the salaries for the EACC Chairperson, Twalib Mbarak, Vice Chairperson, and members remain unchanged at Sh365,000, Sh310,000, and Sh290,000, respectively.
