Boda boda riders to undergo mandatory training after Machakos assault incident

By |

The decision was revealed by BAK National Executive Chairman Kevin Bwire Mubadi, following a disturbing incident involving a bodaboda rider in Machakos County who has been accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger.

All bodaboda riders across the country will be required to undergo compulsory training, focusing on passenger safety, respect, and ethical behaviour, the Bodaboda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) has announced.

The decision was revealed by BAK National Executive Chairman Kevin Bwire Mubadi, following a disturbing incident involving a bodaboda rider in Machakos County who has been accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger.

Reports indicate that the boda boda rider, who had picked up a female passenger on Saturday night, allegedly diverted from the intended route and raped her near Machakos town. The woman reportedly sustained a broken arm and deep cuts on her leg during the attack.

Chairman of boda boda riders in Machakos County Allan Musembi said the rider was arrested by locals who reportedly found him in the act. He said they took the suspect to Machakos police station and the victim to Machakos Level V Hospital.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Bwire said the training will emphasise the importance of treating all passengers with dignity.

He noted that the alleged actions of the rider go against the core values promoted by BAK.

“This act is not only reprehensible but stands in stark contrast to the values and principles that our association promotes. As the National Executive Chairman of BAK, I want to unequivocally condemn this incident. We are committed to the safety and dignity of all passengers, and we take allegations of this nature very seriously,” he said.

“Our primary objective is to ensure that bodaboda riders operate in a manner that is safe and respectful for all individuals.”

The Association also said it will establish a streamlined reporting mechanism for passengers to report misconduct, and closer collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure thorough investigations of such allegations.

“We will establish a streamlined reporting mechanism for passengers to safely report any misconduct by riders. Ensuring that passengers feel secure when speaking out is crucial,” he said.

“We will work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that all allegations of misconduct are thoroughly investigated and that appropriate actions are taken against those found guilty.”

Additionally, BAK plans to roll out public awareness campaigns aimed at educating both riders and passengers on safety practices, rights, and responsibilities within the bodaboda community.

Bwire extended his sympathies to the victim, assuring that BAK remains dedicated to ensuring justice is served.

“We call upon all stakeholders to join us in fostering a culture of safety and respect within the bodaboda community. Together, we can ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” he said.
