Met department issues warning for heavy rainfall across multiple regions including Nairobi

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across various regions of the country from  October 18 to 22, 2024.

The department’s five-day weather forecast indicates that areas such as the Highlands East, West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the North-western region will experience substantial rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms.

Residents in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu should prepare for particularly intense afternoon downpours.

Other areas expecting heavy rain include Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

Highland East counties, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, are also on alert for continuous heavy downpours in the coming days.

Meanwhile, residents in the south-eastern lowlands and North Eastern regions should expect occasional rainfall, but in lighter amounts.

In addition to the rainfall, the meteorological department has cautioned about very cold nights in the aforementioned Highland counties, where temperatures are expected to drop to 10°C in the first three days before slightly rising to 11°C.

Conversely, the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, and Vihiga should be prepared for hot daytime temperatures, which may soar to 35°C.

Similarly, residents in Turkana, Samburu, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are also advised to brace for hot weather.
