15 flood-displaced families in Tana River receive permanent homes in Garsen
For the families of Dumi Cluster, the handover marked an emotional transition, from despair under leaking tents to the promise of a dignified future in solid, secure homes.
15 families who have spent nearly two years living in tattered tents after the 2023 floods can finally breathe easy after receiving permanent houses in the Dumi Cluster, Garsen.
The new homes, modern two-bedroom units fitted with clean water and proper sanitation, were handed over under the Dignified Housing Programme, a partnership between Tana Peace Innovative and the County Government of Tana River.

The beneficiaries are among the 141 households whose lives were uprooted during the devastating floods that swept through the county. For many, today's handover signals a long-awaited return to stability and dignity.
Governor Dhadho Godhana, who presided over the ceremony alongside County Commissioner Joseph Mwangi, said the project is part of a deliberate, long-term strategy to rebuild lives and strengthen resilience against recurring climate shocks.
"This is not a one-off gesture. It is part of our broader commitment to ensure every flood-displaced family in Tana River gets a safe and permanent home, "Governor Dhadho said.

He noted that lessons from past resettlement efforts in Kikomo, Idsowe and Bangale informed the improved design of the Dumi housing units, ensuring they meet dignified standards and are better suited for flood-prone zones.
The governor reiterated that the initiative sits at the heart of the Tana Transformation Agenda, which continues to draw support from national agencies, humanitarian organisations and development partners.
"Every completed project pushes us closer to a modern, well-planned Tana River. We invite more partners to join us, because when we work together, the impact is tremendous," he added.
County Commissioner Mwangi pledged sustained support from the National Government, recalling the joint efforts during the 2023 flood emergency.
"The National Government remains committed to supporting resettlement and long-term development in Tana River. We will walk this journey together," he assured residents.
