Kenyan applicants seeking to travel to Portugal must now submit their visa applications directly to the Portuguese Embassy in Nairobi, the Kenya High Commission in Maputo, Mozambique, has announced.
The change follows the opening of a dedicated visa section in Nairobi, a move expected to simplify the application process, reduce delays, and provide clearer guidance for Kenyan travellers.
Previously, Portuguese Schengen visa applications from Kenyan citizens were handled by the Embassy of Greece in Nairobi under a formal representation agreement with Portugal. Under that arrangement, Kenyan travellers had to submit their documents through the Greek mission, which processed applications on Portugal’s behalf.
Schengen visas allow holders to travel freely across the 27-member Schengen Area with a single visa, removing the need for separate visas for each country. Kenyan citizens wishing to visit Portugal or transit through other Schengen countries must obtain this type of visa.
“The Embassy of Portugal in Nairobi has opened a Visa Section at its premises and has been receiving applications from March 5, 2026,” the High Commission said in a statement dated March 27 and released on Monday.
The statement also confirmed the end of the previous arrangement with the Greek Embassy.
“The Representation Agreement between the Embassy of Portugal in Nairobi and the Embassy of Greece in Nairobi for the issuance of Schengen visas ceased on March 1, 2026,” it added.
With the agreement concluded, all Portuguese visa applications are now processed exclusively by the Portuguese Embassy in Nairobi, giving applicants direct access to Portugal’s consular services.
“This is, therefore, to inform that Portuguese visa applications are now processed at the Embassy of Portugal in Nairobi," the High Commission said.
