The evacuation programme follows a directive by President Yoweri Museveni to safeguard the welfare and safety of Ugandans following recent anti-migrant violence attacks in South Africa.

The government of Uganda has begun evacuating its citizens from South Africa, with the first batch of 260 evacuees arriving on Thursday night aboard a special Uganda Airlines charter flight.
The second and third batches are expected later today, carrying 35 evacuees and 114 others, respectively.
In a statement, the government said the evacuation programme follows a directive by President Yoweri Museveni to safeguard the welfare and safety of Ugandans following recent anti-migrant violence and xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
“The repatriation exercise is being coordinated jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, the Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uganda, the Ministry of Works and Transport of Uganda, the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, and leaders of the Ugandan community in South Africa,” the state said, adding that the special charter flights, are fully funded by the government.
It added that the state is actively engaged with South African authorities to ensure the continued safety and welfare of Ugandans who remain in the country.
Meanwhile, the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria will continue to provide critical on-the-ground support, including the registration of evacuees, the establishment of safe assembly centres, and the issuance of emergency travel documents, where necessary, to facilitate the smooth evacuation process ahead of additional repatriation flights.
