Weekend gatherings don't have to be elaborate to feel special. A colourful homemade mocktail is an easy way to elevate lunch, an afternoon catch-up or an evening on the balcony or garden.
The combination of juicy mango, zesty lime, warming ginger and a subtle chilli kick creates a drink that's refreshing enough for hot afternoons while offering a memorable burst of flavour.
Whether you are hosting a barbecue, relaxing in the garden or catching up with friends, this easy recipe is guaranteed to impress:
Ingredients
2 ripe mangoes, peeled and diced
1½ cups chilled sparkling water or soda water
½ cup fresh orange juice
Juice of 2 limes
1-2 teaspoons honey or simple syrup (optional)
½ teaspoon chilli powder or chilli flakes (adjust to taste)
A small piece of fresh ginger, grated
Ice cubes
Fresh mint leaves
Lime slices for garnish
A pinch of salt
Optional rim
Chilli powder
Salt
Lime wedge
Steps to follow
Step 1
If using a chilli-salt rim, rub a lime wedge around the edge of each glass and dip it into a mixture of chilli powder and salt.
Step 2
Blend the diced mangoes, orange juice, lime juice, grated ginger, honey and a pinch of salt until smooth.
Step 3
Taste the mixture and add more lime juice for extra tang or more honey if you prefer a sweeter drink.
Step 4
Fill serving glasses halfway with ice cubes.
Pour the mango mixture into each glass until about two-thirds full.
Step 5
Top up with chilled sparkling water and stir gently. Sprinkle a light pinch of chilli powder or flakes on top.
Step 6
Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a slice of lime.
Serve it alongside grilled meats, samosas, nyama choma, fruit platters or light snacks, and let the weekend conversations flow!
Tips for the perfect mocktail

Chill all your ingredients beforehand so you don't need too much ice.
Use ripe, naturally sweet mangoes for the best flavour.
For an extra tropical twist, replace half the sparkling water with chilled pineapple juice.
If serving children, leave out the chilli garnish and let guests add it to taste.
