Thunder boosted ahead of BAL debut by return of key forward
Nairobi City Thunder have been boosted by the return of an experienced American forward as they gear up for their debut in the Basketball Africa League. The reigning Kenyan champions will be the first team from the country to take part in the continental showpiece.
Kenya Basketball Premier League champions Nairobi City Thunder have received a timely boost ahead of their maiden appearance in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) with the return of American forward William Sidney Davis II.
Davis, 32, rejoined Thunder after terminating his contract with Taiwanese club Kaohsiung Steelers in February. The 6-foot-8 power forward had initially signed with the Nairobi-based club in September 2023 from NBA G-League side Ignite, before briefly moving to Taiwan in December.
“I’m happy to be back. I love competition and I’m looking forward to getting started,” said Davis, who has previously played for clubs in the USA, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, and the UAE.

His return comes as Thunder, coached by fellow American Brad Ibs, prepare for their historic debut at the 2025 BAL. The club will become the first ever Kenyan side to feature in the prestigious continental tournament.
Thunder will compete in the Nile Conference, one of three conferences in the 12-team competition, alongside APR (Rwanda), Al Ahli Tripoli (Libya), and Made By Basketball (South Africa).
The Nile Conference matches will take place at the BK Arena in Kigali from May 18 to May 25. Each team will face the others twice in a round-robin format.
Thunder’s fixtures are as follows:
May 17 – vs APR
May 18 – vs Al Ahli Tripoli
May 20 – vs Made By Basketball
May 22 – vs Al Ahli Tripoli
May 24 – vs Made By Basketball
May 25 – vs APR
According to the tournament rules, the top two teams from each conference, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarterfinals.
