Kenyan diaspora holds emotional vigil in Washington, D.C to honour Raila Odinga

A deep sense of unity and remembrance filled the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, D.C, on Saturday as Kenyans living in the United States gathered to honour the late Raila Odinga through a moving vigil and memorial service.

The event, organised by Kenya’s Ambassador to the US, David Kerich, provided a moment for the Diaspora to celebrate the life of the former Prime Minister and reflect on his contribution to Kenya’s political journey.

The evening service at the Kenyan Chancery featured prayers, hymns, and a candle-lighting session led by Rev. Capt. Carolyne Adhola of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church.

Emotional tributes flowed as speakers praised Raila as a selfless leader whose pursuit of democracy, equality, and peace changed the course of Kenya’s history.

In his remarks, Ambassador Kerich described Raila as a visionary whose influence reached far beyond Kenya’s borders.

“His visionary leadership, commitment to democratic ideals, pursuit of justice, and dedication to national unity continue to inspire generations in Kenya and the wider African continent,” he said.

The embassy lauded the Kenyan community in the United States for turning out in large numbers to pay tribute, describing their presence as a symbol of patriotism and togetherness.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the Kenyan Diaspora for their unwavering solidarity in honouring a true national hero whose legacy endures,” read part of its statement.

Raila, who passed away on October 15, 2025, served as Kenya’s second Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013.

His passing has sparked a wave of grief and remembrance across the world, with tributes pouring in from leaders, citizens, and institutions recognising his lifelong struggle for justice and reform.

The Washington vigil was among several memorial events held globally in his memory. Raila will be laid to rest at his family home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo, where a state funeral will take place on Sunday.
