Duolingo moves beyond words: Chess lessons coming to language app

The new feature is part of Duolingo’s broader vision to make learning more engaging and brain-friendly by incorporating strategic and skill-based games.

Duolingo, the globally popular language learning app known for turning education into a daily habit, is expanding its offering beyond verbs and vocabulary. The company has announced that it is introducing chess lessons to its platform, a bold step into the world of cognitive gaming.

The new feature is part of Duolingo’s broader vision to make learning more engaging and brain-friendly by incorporating strategic and skill-based games.

Just as users have grown used to earning XP by practising Spanish, French or Chinese, soon, they may be able to keep their streaks alive by mastering the opening moves of chess.

According to Duolingo, the addition of chess aims to strengthen mental agility, focus and decision-making, much like learning a new language. Chess will be taught as a lesson, but as a fun and more practical way.

“Chess is the universal language of strategy,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“By bringing it into our ecosystem, we’re expanding how people learn and challenge themselves.”

While the announcement has been met with excitement from Duolingo’s global user base, the company has yet to confirm when the new chess feature will be rolled out to all users.

Early testing is likely to begin in select regions before a full launch.

Duolingo has steadily been branching out from pure language instruction. In 2023, the app introduced Duolingo Music, a feature that teaches users how to read music and play basic melodies.

The success of that launch paved the way for even more diverse learning tools, with chess now taking the spotlight.

For now, language lovers and logic enthusiasts alike can only wait and watch as Duolingo continues to evolve into a one-stop learning hub, where saying “checkmate” might soon feel as satisfying as nailing your first full sentence in French or Russian.
