Somalia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has expressed regret over the decision by the United States authorities to deny entry to Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was scheduled for duties in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement issued by the ministry, the government said it had undertaken diplomatic efforts with relevant authorities to support his travel, but the efforts did not lead to a positive outcome.
The ministry confirmed that Artan has since returned to Somalia and will continue his national and international responsibilities.
“The Ministry expresses its deep regret over the decision by the authorities of the United States of America to deny entry to Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan,” the statement read.
Artan is the 2025 Confederation of African Football Referee of the Year and has been appointed for officiating roles linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is widely regarded within Somali sporting institutions as one of the country’s most accomplished referees.
The ministry described him as a figure of national pride whose achievements continue to be recognised internationally.
In its statement, the ministry said the government of Somalia had made efforts through diplomatic channels to facilitate his travel. It noted that these engagements were carried out with the relevant authorities, although they did not result in approval for his entry into the United States.
“Somalia undertook diplomatic efforts with the relevant authorities in support of Artan's travel. Regrettably, these efforts did not result in a favourable outcome,” the statement said.
The ministry also said it remains engaged on the matter and will continue discussions with relevant partners to seek clarification regarding the decision. It added that Somalia aims to ensure that the rights and dignity of its citizens are protected in international settings, including in sporting engagements.
The statement emphasised that, despite the outcome of the travel arrangements, the government maintains its support for Artan and his professional career. It said his success serves as an example for young people in Somalia and reflects the potential of Somali professionals in international fields.
“The Government of Somalia remains immensely proud of Artan's achievements and contributions. His success continues to inspire Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to international excellence,” the statement read.
The ministry further confirmed that Artan is safe and has returned home, where he will continue his duties. It extended appreciation to countries, institutions, sporting bodies, individuals, and supporters who expressed solidarity during the situation.
“The Ministry also extends its sincere appreciation to all brotherly countries, individuals, institutions, sporting bodies, and well-wishers who expressed solidarity and support during this period,” the statement said.
It concluded by reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to continued engagement with relevant partners on the matter and reiterated its pride in the referee’s achievements.
“Somalia will continue engaging with relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding this matter and to safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens. Welcome home, Artan. The Somali people stand proudly with you and celebrate your remarkable achievements,” the statement added.
