Somali FIFA referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been honoured by the Kuwait Football Association in recognition of his standing in international football, even as he continues to face setbacks on the global stage, including missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The recognition comes just weeks after Artan was unable to officiate at the tournament in the United States after being denied entry into the country.
Although FIFA had selected him among the referees for the competition, immigration authorities prevented him from entering the host nation, ending what would have been a historic World Cup debut for Somalia’s most accomplished football referee.
The Kuwait Football Association said it had honoured Artan for his achievements and contribution to international football.
The award was presented before he officiated the final match of the 2025–2026 Zain Premier League season between Kuwait SC and Al Qadsia SC.
The title-deciding clash featured two of Kuwait’s top clubs and was attended by Kuwait Football Association Chairman Sheikh Ahmad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah. Kuwait SC went on to win the match and secure the league championship, with Artan in charge as referee.
The appointment underscored continued confidence in the Somali official despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup. Officiating a league final is considered a prestigious assignment, often reserved for referees trusted with high-stakes matches that determine a season’s outcome.
Artan has spent years building his reputation across African and international football. Since joining FIFA’s international list of referees in 2018, he has officiated in the CAF Champions League, the Africa Cup of Nations and other major continental competitions, earning recognition as one of the continent’s leading match officials.
His rise continued in 2025 when the Confederation of African Football named him Africa’s Men’s Referee of the Year, making him the first Somali referee to receive the honour and further elevating his profile on the global stage.
FIFA later selected Artan among the officials for the 2026 World Cup, a move that would have made him the first Somali referee to officiate at the men’s tournament finals. The appointment was widely celebrated in Somalia and seen as a landmark moment for the country’s football community.
However, the opportunity fell through shortly before the tournament began. Artan travelled to the United States after receiving the required travel documents but was denied entry upon arrival. FIFA later clarified that participation depended on the immigration rules of the host country and that it had no authority over border control decisions.
The incident drew widespread attention in the football world, prompting reactions from Somali sports officials, football administrators and fans, many of whom expressed disappointment over the decision. For many in Somalia, Artan’s World Cup selection symbolised years of progress and was expected to inspire a new generation of referees.
Despite the setback, Artan has continued to receive major international appointments. UEFA later selected him to officiate the UEFA Super Cup, another high-profile assignment that reflected his continued standing among elite referees.
His latest recognition by the Kuwait Football Association adds another milestone to a career that has remained on an upward trajectory despite recent challenges.
By honouring him and assigning him to the Kuwait league final, the federation acknowledged both his achievements and the experience he has gained at the highest levels of African and international football.
