The story behind Sofapaka’s journey from relegation fears to top seven

Sofapaka FC has undergone a remarkable transformation in the FKF Premier League, rising from last season's struggles to become a competitive force. Under the guidance of coach Robert Matano and with a fresh focus on young talent, the team has climbed the standings, leaving behind the fears of relegation.

Sofapaka has made an impressive recovery in the FKF Premier League this season, showing great improvement compared to last year.

Led by head coach Robert Matano, nicknamed "The Lion" for his strict style, the team has become more competitive. They have improved their teamwork and tactics on the pitch.

This progress has helped Sofapaka climb the league standings. Their success shows the club’s hard work and determination. Matano rejoined Sofapaka in the 2023/24 season after leaving Tusker FC.

In the 2023/24 season, Sofapaka finished in 16th place with just 36 points. They played 34 matches, winning 9, drawing 9, and losing 16. The poor results left them in the relegation zone.

Sofapaka CEO Ronald Okoth explained the reasons behind the team's struggles. He said the team lacked motivation and faced challenges due to a transfer ban caused by debts owed to former Burundian players David Nshimirimana, Fiston Razak, and Moussa Omar.

"There was a lack of motivation, and we didn’t have a complete squad. The transfer ban made things worse since we couldn’t sign new players while losing others," Okoth said.

To avoid relegation, Sofapaka had to play in the playoffs. They faced Naivas FC over two legs and won 2-0 on aggregate. The first leg on 6th July 2024 ended 1-0 in Sofapaka's favour, and the second leg on 14th July secured their place in the league.

A Fresh Start in 2024/25

The 2024/25 season has been much better for Sofapaka. After 15 games, they have 5 wins, 6 draws, and 4 losses, earning 21 points and placing 7th on the table.

Okoth credited the turnaround to changes in management and the lifting of the transfer ban. "When management changed, the team regained motivation. We worked to resolve the transfer ban and now have a policy of signing young, talented players," he said.

He also praised coach Robert Matano, who is known for his discipline and ability to inspire players. "Matano is the most successful coach in Kenya. His coaching style is demanding but brings out the best in the players. He knows the DNA of the club," Okoth said.

Despite the progress, Sofapaka still faces challenges. Okoth said the club is looking for sponsors and partners to ensure financial stability. He added that the team is motivated and working in a positive environment.

Looking ahead, Sofapaka plans to grow its fan base by opening branches across the country. Okoth shared plans to introduce fan memberships and merchandise discounts. "We want to recruit fans and have them officially register as members. This will help us track membership and open branches in areas like Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Meru."

The club is already working on these plans and has scheduled a meeting with branch leaders to create a clear roadmap for recruiting fans from different regions.
