Shujaa stage comeback to reach 9th-place final at Perth 7s

Shujaa bounced back from Day One defeats to secure back-to-back wins over Uruguay and USA at the Perth Sevens, booking a spot in the 9th-place final against New Zealand on Sunday.

After a tough opening day at the 2024-25 Perth Sevens, where Shujaa fell to New Zealand and Fiji, the team bounced back on Day Two with back-to-back wins over Uruguay and USA. The victories secured their place in the 9th-place final, where they will face Pool C opponents New Zealand on Sunday.

Shujaa's 19-5 victory over Uruguay was critical in leapfrogging New Zealand into third place in Pool C. However, their hopes of reaching the main cup quarterfinals were dashed as their points difference (47-55) fell short of Great Britain's (24-24), who advanced as one of the two best third-placed teams.

Kenya started strongly against Uruguay, with Kevin Wekesa opening the scoring in the third minute. Tries from Nygel Amaitsa and Patrick Odongo extended their lead to 19-0 by halftime. Despite a late Uruguay try, Shujaa’s defence held firm to secure the win.

In the 9th-place semi-final, Shujaa overcame USA in a thrilling encounter. Captain George Ooro led by example, scoring twice as Kenya built a commanding 19-7 lead. Though USA rallied late, Shujaa sealed the victory with a try from Floyd Wabwire, converted by Nygel Amaitsa, for a 26-21 final score.

Shujaa now set their sights on New Zealand in the 9th-place final, with a chance to avenge their earlier pool-stage loss. The match kicks off on Sunday at 9:14 am.
