Kisumu County ends Sponsorship for Kisumu All Stars as club faces uncertain future

Kisumu All Stars have suffered a major setback after the Kisumu County Government officially ended its financial support for the club. With the FKF National Super League side already struggling with funding delays in the past, the latest decision leaves their future hanging in the balance.

FKF National Super League side Kisumu All Stars will have to seek alternative funding after the Kisumu County Government opted not to renew its sponsorship deal with the club.

In a letter dated November 26, 2024, addressed to the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Kisumu County Chief Officer for Sports, Culture, Gender, and Youth Affairs, Francis Asunah, confirmed that the county would no longer provide financial support to the team. He also instructed the club’s CEO to relay the decision to players and technical staff.

The County Government of Kisumu had been funding Kisumu All Stars to the tune of Ksh 5 million per season. However, financial struggles were not uncommon, with the club frequently facing operational challenges due to delayed disbursements.

One of the most notable instances occurred in March 2023 when the team was unable to travel to Nairobi to honour a fixture against Kibera Black Stars, resulting in a walkover. At the time, the County Government attributed the funding delays to late disbursements from the National Treasury.

With county sponsorship now withdrawn, Kisumu All Stars faces an uncertain future unless a new benefactor steps in to provide financial support.

Kisumu All Stars was revived in December 2017 by the County Government of Kisumu as a replacement for the now-defunct Palos FC, which folded due to financial constraints. The club earned promotion to the Kenyan Premier League in 2019 but was relegated after just one season in 2020.

Since then, Kisumu All Stars has been competing in the FKF National Super League, where they currently sit 8th in the standings with 23 points from 17 matches. They are set to travel to Nairobi this weekend for a clash against Naivas, hoping to end a five-match winless streak.
