Kenyan referees Josephine Wanjiku, Caroline Kiles, Elizabeth Njoroge, and Lucy Juma have been appointed to officiate the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier between Chad and Senegal on 21 February 2025 in Côte d’Ivoire.

Before heading to West Africa, the quartet fine-tuned their preparations by officiating the FKF Premier League clash between Kariobangi Sharks and Posta Rangers at Dandora Stadium, Nairobi, a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

Their selection for this crucial continental fixture highlights the growing recognition of Kenyan match officials in African football. Speaking ahead of their assignment, the referees shared their experiences and aspirations in the officiating world.

Josephine Wanjiku reflected on her journey: “I started refereeing in 2012, beginning in the lower leagues and gradually working my way up. Now, as a FIFA referee, my dream is to officiate at the World Cup.”

Caroline Kiles addressed the challenges women face in officiating: “It’s not easy, as society is still learning to accept female referees. Many doubt our capabilities, but we continue to prove ourselves with hard work and professionalism in every match.”

Elizabeth Njoroge expressed her excitement: “Being selected for this match is an honour. It shows confidence in my abilities, and I’m eager to prove myself. My ultimate dream is to officiate at the World Cup.”

As they prepare for the WAFCON qualifier, Wanjiku, Kiles, Njoroge, and Juma carry not only the whistle but also the hopes of Kenyan officiating on the continental stage.
