Kenyan quartet selected to officiate at 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco

Kenya’s refereeing standards continue to shine on the continental stage after Peter Kamaku Waweru was named among the officials selected to take charge of matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set for Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Waweru, one of Africa’s most respected referees, will serve as a centre referee and lead a team of four Kenyan officials appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Joining him are Dickens Mimisa, Gilbert Cheruiyot, and Stephen Yiembe, marking one of Kenya’s strongest-ever representations at Africa’s premier football competition.

Waweru’s inclusion caps off a standout year for the seasoned referee, who was earlier invited to CAF’s elite training camp in Cairo, bringing together the continent’s top officials in preparation for AFCON.
Known for his calm authority, sharp decision-making, and consistency, Waweru has previously officiated at AFCON 2021, the African Nations Championship (CHAN), and FIFA tournaments, cementing his reputation as one of the continent’s finest.
In the supporting roles, Dickens Mimisa will serve as one of the Video Assistant Referees (VAR), while Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe will feature as assistant referees. The selection continues Kenya’s strong presence in CAF competitions, following their participation in recent CHAN tournaments, where Mimisa, Yiembe, and Samuel Kuria Mwangi were also part of the officiating team.
This year’s AFCON will be staged across six venues in Morocco: Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex (Rabat), Mohammed V Stadium (Casablanca), Fez Stadium, Adrar Stadium (Agadir), Marrakech Stadium, and Ibn Battuta Stadium (Tangier).
Host nation Morocco will open the tournament against Comoros on December 21, before facing Mali on December 25 in Rabat.
The appointment of the four Kenyan officials marks another proud moment for the nation’s football fraternity a reflection of years of dedication, professionalism, and continuous investment in officiating excellence.
