Sudan’s military leader Burhan briefs Eritrean President Afwerki on war situation
Sudan’s Sovereignty Council confirmed the discussions also covered strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation between Sudan and Eritrea.
Sudan’s top military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, travelled to Eritrea on Thursday, where he held talks with President Isaias Afwerki on the conflict in Sudan and matters concerning cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting took place at the presidential palace in Asmara, where the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including the situation in Sudan, peace efforts, and both regional and international developments.

In a statement issued by the Sovereignty Council, Burhan said the visit was meant to update the Eritrean leadership on recent developments in Sudan.
He expressed appreciation for Eritrea’s continued support, which he said has been vital in efforts to maintain the unity of Sudan.
According to Eritrea’s information ministry, Burhan told the Eritrean News Agency that his one-day working visit was “principally aimed at briefing the Eritrean leadership on recent developments of the conflict in Sudan.”
The ministry further stated that he “paid tribute to the substantial and continuous support extended by the Government and people of Eritrea to the people of Sudan.”
President Isaias, in response, welcomed Burhan and thanked him for the visit. The Sudanese statement noted that Afwerki showed appreciation for the engagement between the two nations.
Eritrea’s information ministry reported that Afwerki reaffirmed the country’s position in support of Sudan.
“The brotherly people of Sudan emanates from solid principles and moral obligations,” the ministry quoted Isaias as saying.
The Eritrean president also spoke against foreign involvement in Sudan’s affairs. He called on countries in the region to support a peaceful end to the conflict without outside interference.
“The achievement of an enduring peaceful solution to the conflict without the encumbrance and exacerbation of external intervention,” the Eritrean ministry quoted him as saying.
General Burhan was joined on the trip by Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, who serves as the director of Sudan’s General Intelligence Service.
Since fighting broke out between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Eritrea has stood with the Sudanese military and kept its border open for civilians fleeing the violence.
The conflict has triggered a large-scale humanitarian crisis, forcing thousands of Sudanese to cross into neighbouring countries.
The visit comes as regional players continue to watch the situation in Sudan closely, with efforts ongoing to find a solution to the crisis.
