Obiero, Oduor voice Rising Stars’ confidence ahead of AFCON U20

“We’re not just going to participate - we’re going to win every game,” says Kenya U20 goalkeeper Wycliffe Oduor, as the Rising Stars intensify preparations for their first-ever AFCON U20 campaign.
England-based midfielder Zech Obiero says the Kenya U20 national team, the Rising Stars, are embracing the challenge ahead of the upcoming Africa U20 Cup of Nations with confidence, commitment, and clarity of purpose.
“I’ve always wanted to play for Kenya,” said Obiero after their latest friendly. “That’s a big thing for me because of my father. The experience has been good—just really hot and sometimes a bit of a shock to get around—but it’s really good.”
Obiero, who plays for Leyton Orient in England, emphasised the strong mentality in the camp and dismissed any notion that Kenya were heading into the tournament as underdogs.
“I don’t think we’re underdogs at all. We’re preparing, training hard every day. Our mindsets are good. Everyone’s just ready to get there.”
Adapting to different football environments has been part of his growth. “The most challenging part is the difference in play styles. Obviously, where I play, it’s different. But I just have to stay focused wherever I am. Give it my all, whether I’m in Kenya or at Leyton. Train hard, play hard. That doesn’t change.”
With the tournament fast approaching, Obiero is keeping his goals short-term and focused. “Right now, it’s about AFCON. That’s what my mind’s on. At club level, it’s about playing as many games as I can and impacting matches. Hopefully, that leads to good results.”
Goalkeeper Wycliffe Oduor echoed the ambition running through the team. “We are so motivated because this is our first time playing at AFCON. We’re not just going to participate—we’re going to win every game. Every match is a final for us. We’re going to make a statement, and I have full confidence in all our players.”
Their confidence was evident in their performance at the Mpesa Foundation Grounds, where the Rising Stars beat Police Youth 3-1. Kevin Wanganya, Eli Owade, and Lawrence Ouma found the net in a match that underlined the team’s growing cohesion and tactical awareness. The win adds to their momentum following a 4-0 victory over FKF Premier League side Ulinzi Stars, as preparations for Egypt continue.
