Addressing the public on Friday, the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua highlighted the government's proactive measures, in collaboration with the National Emergency Response Committee and other partners, to mitigate the adverse effects of the ongoing heavy rains.

He informed that aircraft have been deployed for evacuating families stranded by floods to safer locations.

Emphasising the government's commitment to education, the Deputy President mentioned the delivery of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations to areas with disrupted access due to damaged roads. He also outlined collaborative efforts with development partners, counties, and key agencies to distribute essential items like maize, rice, beans, and cooking oil to affected families, aiming to alleviate their suffering.

The Deputy President underscored the activation of multi-agency teams and the mobilisation of technical and financial resources for an efficient and effective response. The Emergency Response Committee is coordinating a consolidated approach to prevent duplication and ensure comprehensive coverage.

In addition to providing food and non-food items, the government is actively addressing health concerns. The Deputy President mentioned the setup of mobile health facilities in areas where infrastructure has been compromised and assured the public of ongoing monitoring by the Ministries of Health and Agriculture to prevent disease outbreaks.

With weather projections indicating prolonged rains until the First Quarter of 2024, the government is focused on safety messaging. The Ministry of Roads and Transport is undertaking emergency repairs and rehabilitation to improve access, while efforts are being made to unclog waterways and drainage systems.

The Deputy President urged communities in lowlands and landslide-prone areas to evacuate to safer grounds and shared distress call numbers for swift assistance during emergencies. He called on the media to raise awareness about the evolving situation, emphasizing the collective responsibility to prevent the loss of lives and livelihoods.
