Wanyonyi delivered a sensational performance on Friday night, clocking 2:11.83 to eclipse the previous world record set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny in 1999, further cementing his place among the world's finest middle-distance runners.

President William Ruto has led Kenyans in celebrating Emmanuel Wanyonyi after the middle‑distance star shattered the men’s 1,000‑metre world record at the Monaco Diamond League, ending a 27‑year wait for a new global mark.
Wanyonyi delivered a sensational performance on Friday night, clocking 2:11.83 to eclipse the previous world record set by compatriot Noah Ngeny in 1999, further cementing his place among the world’s finest middle‑distance runners.
Congratulating the reigning Olympic and world champion, Ruto described the achievement as another milestone that underscores Kenya’s enduring dominance in global athletics.
"Congratulations to Emmanuel Wanyonyi on breaking the men's 1000m world record with a remarkable 2:11.83 at the Monaco Diamond League," Ruto said in a post on X.
Ruto said the athlete’s landmark feat had once again demonstrated the strength of Kenyan athletics on the world stage and filled the nation with pride.
"Wanyonyi's historic achievement has once again shown the world the strength of Kenyan athletics and made our nation immensely proud. His outstanding milestone will inspire many more generations of champions," he added.
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen also hailed the achievement, saying Wanyonyi had demonstrated what Kenyan youth can accomplish through commitment and determination.
CS Murkomen highlighted that the world record reaffirmed Kenya’s greatness in athletics and would inspire more young people to pursue excellence.
Tourism CS Rebecca Miano described Wanyonyi’s record‑breaking performance as a proud moment for the country, saying Kenya’s athletes remain its greatest tourism ambassadors.
Miano added that the achievement had once again showcased Kenya as the "Home of Champions," noting that the country’s athletes continue to elevate the Magical Kenya brand by displaying exceptional talent, resilience and determination on the global stage.
"Our warmest congratulations to the reigning Olympic and World Champion, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, for shattering the long‑standing 27‑year‑old World Record in the men's 1000 metres at the Monaco Diamond League," Miano said.
Sports CS Salim Mvurya congratulated the athlete, praising his determination and discipline, while Co‑operatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya said Wanyonyi had etched his name into athletics history by ending a 27‑year wait for a new world record in the event.
The milestone cements Wanyonyi’s reputation as one of Kenya’s brightest athletics stars and reinforces the country’s standing as a global powerhouse in middle‑distance running.
