President Ruto urged fans to rally behind the national under-17 women's team ahead of their decisive return-leg qualifier against South Africa's Bantwana, saying the players had earned the nation's backing.

President William Ruto has called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday to support the Junior Starlets as they bid to secure a second consecutive qualification for the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup.
In a video message shared on Saturday, President Ruto urged fans to rally behind the national under-17 women's team ahead of their decisive return-leg qualifier against South Africa's Bantwana, saying the players had earned the nation's backing.
"Kenyans, just to remind you, our Junior Starlets team is 90 minutes away from qualifying for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup once again. The team has earned this moment. Now it's our turn as a nation to stand behind them," Ruto said.
He called on supporters to fill Nyayo National Stadium with national flags and unwavering support, describing the match as an opportunity for Kenyans to unite behind the next generation of footballers.
"Let's fill the stadium with our flags, our voices and our belief in the next generation. This is more than football. One nation, one team, one dream. Tukutane at Nyayo Stadium this Sunday. Let's go, Kenya!" he added.
The Junior Starlets head into Sunday's match with a 2-0 advantage after defeating South Africa in the first leg in Pretoria last weekend. A draw or another victory at Nyayo Stadium will be enough to book Kenya's place at the 2026 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.
Head coach Mildred Cheche also appealed to Kenyans to turn up in large numbers, saying a packed stadium would inspire the players as they seek to complete the qualification campaign.
"We appreciate the support that we have been receiving from Kenyans, and we urge them to turn up in large numbers at Nyayo and show their support to the team. A full Nyayo Stadium will go a long way in boosting our morale to give our best and qualify for the World Cup," she said.
The Junior Starlets are seeking a second appearance at the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup after making history by qualifying for the 2024 tournament in the Dominican Republic. The 2026 edition will be held in Morocco from October 17 to November 7 and will feature 24 teams.
