Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei confirmed that during the incident, the officers confronted a suspicious motorcycle along Kagundo Road carrying a pillion passenger and tried to stop it but the rider defied the orders and sped off, prompting a police chase.
The pillion passenger jumped off the motorbike and started engaging the officers using the weapon but was overpowered and killed and his weapon was recovered. It will be used as an exhibit in the ongoing murder probe.
This incident follows the arrest of 27-year-old Paul Odhiambo by DCI detectives on November 22 last year. Odhiambo was traced by DCI detectives to his hideout in Kiambiu slums. The killer pistol was, however, not recovered at the time.
The suspect, who goes by the alias Fazul Mohamed, was captured on CCTV camera approaching the deceased from the back before getting close to him, shooting him, stealing his phone, and fleeing the scene.
The deceased had been talking with his girlfriend at the time, whom he was meeting in the area. The killer did not hurt her.
Detectives said they were probing whether Odhiambo had ties to a gang that was involved in the murder of DCI officer David Mayaka of Kayole Police Station. The killing happened in the Mihang'o area of Kayole on August 23, 2023.
The officer was fatally shot by three men riding a motorcycle and the matter is in court.
