A transformed Kamukunji Recreation Park is giving new life to one of Nairobi's most iconic public spaces, offering residents modern facilities for sports, recreation and community activities.
The upgraded park, situated on the historic Kamukunji Grounds, now features a wide range of amenities designed to serve thousands of residents from surrounding neighbourhoods while promoting youth engagement, cultural activities and environmental conservation.
The redevelopment of the 7.27-acre site has introduced several new sporting facilities, including an 11-a-side football pitch, a 7-a-side football field, basketball courts and a boxing ring.
It also includes a community centre equipped with a library, an information technology laboratory and a recording studio to support learning and nurture young talent.

Visitors can also enjoy children's play areas, landscaped gardens, paved walkways and solar-lit open spaces that provide room for recreation and public gatherings. An amphitheatre has also been built to host community events and other public activities.
According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo, the redevelopment was carefully planned to preserve the site's historical significance while adapting it to meet the needs of today's communities.
"The transformation of Kamukunji Grounds into Kamukunji Recreation Park demonstrates a careful balance between preserving a landmark of Kenya's democratic history and introducing modern urban amenities," said Omollo.
Kamukunji Grounds holds a significant place in Kenya's history as the venue of the 1990 Saba Saba rally and remains one of the country's best-known public gathering spaces.
Government officials say the redevelopment was designed to preserve that legacy while expanding the park's role as a hub for sports, culture and community interaction.
Beyond recreation, the project includes infrastructure improvements aimed at tackling long-standing environmental challenges in the area. Enhanced drainage systems and retaining walls have been installed to help reduce flooding and support ongoing efforts under the Nairobi Rivers regeneration programme.
Officials say these upgrades will create a safer and more accessible environment for residents while protecting the surrounding area from the impact of seasonal flooding.
The redevelopment is also expected to boost local economic activity by attracting more visitors and creating opportunities linked to sports, recreation and community events. Government officials believe the upgraded facility will strengthen social ties by providing residents with a shared space for interaction and engagement.
Omollo said the park is already helping bring the community together through a variety of activities.
"The facelift is revitalising community life by creating a safe, inclusive hub for sport, culture and youth engagement, while stimulating local social and economic activity," he said.
To ensure the facility remains well-maintained and secure, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration will oversee its management through coordinated security, maintenance and operational programmes.
Officials say this approach is intended to safeguard the park as a public asset while ensuring residents continue to benefit from its facilities for years to come.
