The move follows widespread allegations circulating across social and mainstream media platforms, raising doubts about the credibility of some academic certificates issued by the institution.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has ordered a comprehensive investigation into questionable degrees issued by Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), amid mounting concerns over the authenticity of some recent graduates.
In a directive issued on April 1, Ogamba tasked the Commission for University Education (CUE) with verifying whether all listed graduands were bona fide students and had legitimately met the requirements for the qualifications awarded.
The move follows widespread allegations circulating across social and mainstream media platforms, raising doubts about the credibility of some academic certificates issued by the institution.
"Following allegations circulating on various social and mainstream media platforms questioning the bona fides of some graduands at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, I have today directed the Commission for University Education to undertake a thorough investigation into the matter," said Ogamba in a statement on X.
He stressed that the probe will be thorough and aimed at establishing the truth, noting that the integrity of academic qualifications must be safeguarded at all costs.
"The Commission is required to ascertain that all graduands were, in fact, students at the University, and that they duly qualified for the award of the qualifications that were conferred upon them," he added.
The CS underscored that the investigation forms part of broader efforts to protect Kenya’s standing as a regional hub for quality education, particularly as local academic credentials increasingly compete in global spaces.
"The Ministry of Education is committed to promoting and strengthening the credibility of our education and qualifications system, to safeguard our reputation as a regional and international education hub," Ogamba stated.
CUE is the statutory body mandated to regulate and oversee university education in Kenya.
Established under the Universities Act, 2012, the Commission is responsible for accrediting institutions, approving academic programmes, and ensuring quality standards across all universities.
It also monitors compliance to guarantee that degrees awarded meet national and international benchmarks.
