‘Addis Standard’ editor Million Beyene missing after alleged abduction in Ethiopian capital

Addis Standard managing editor Million Beyene remains missing in Addis Ababa nearly 48 hours after being seized, prompting urgent appeals from his family, colleagues and press freedom organisations.

An editor at Ethiopia's Addis Standard remains missing nearly 48 hours after he was taken by security personnel in Addis Ababa, raising concern among colleagues, family members, and press freedom organisations.
The outlet said the whereabouts of its managing editor, Million Beyene, are still unknown.
His phone briefly became active at around 10:00 pm on Thursday before going silent again, further heightening fears over his safety.
His family and colleagues say they are increasingly distressed as efforts to trace him continue.
JAKENN Publishing PLC, which publishes Addis Standard, has called for his immediate and safe return, urging authorities, including the Addis Ababa Police and the Federal Police Commission, to move quickly to establish his whereabouts.

The publisher has also appealed to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission to investigate what it described as a possible enforced disappearance and to ensure accountability.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also raised concern over the incident.
In a statement, CPJ said Beyene was seized on Wednesday morning by plainclothes men from the newsroom and taken to an undisclosed location.
The organisation described the incident as alarming, warning that it marks a troubling escalation.
“Ethiopian authorities must immediately establish who took Million Beyene away, ensure his release, and hold those responsible to account,” said Muthoki Mumo, CPJ’s Africa programme coordinator.
