Kenya's Harambee Stars held by Russia in four-goal thriller

By |

Kenya is currently ranked 109 in the Fifa men’s world ranking whereas Russia is ranked at position 39.

Kenya's Harambee Stars and Russia played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in an international friendly match played at the Mardan Sports Complex stadium in Antalya, Turkey on Monday evening.

Ivan Oblyakov spared the blushes of the 2018 World Cup hosts after a last-gasp 89th-minute equaliser dented Kenya's hopes of a crucial win.

Earlier, Aleksandr Sobolev put Russia ahead in the 9th minute after an assist from Maksim Mukhin.

However, Kenya responded swiftly eight minutes later with Anthony Okumu getting on the scoresheet in the 16th minute.

Kenya's dominance continued and they were rewarded with their second goal of the night courtesy of a goal by Saudi League's Al-Jabalain player Masoud Juma ensuring that Harambee Stars went in at the break ahead.

The draw is a morale-booster for Kenya following a painful 1-0 loss at the hands of South Sudan last month.

Kenya is currently ranked 109 in the Fifa men’s world ranking whereas Russia is ranked at position 39.

Kenya had earlier in September beaten Qatar 2-1 in Doha.

Next up for Harambee Stars will be a round of tough fixtures for World Cup qualification that will take place in 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Kenya is placed in Group ‘F’ alongside Ivory Coast, Gabon, Gambia, Burundi and Seychelles.

Kenya begins their quest for World Cup qualification against Gabon at Stade de Franceville on November 13.
