Kenya dismisses CHAN hosting rumours, promises readiness by February

Kenya has dispelled rumours of losing its hosting rights for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) due to delays in facility upgrades. Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured that preparations are on track and highlighted the importance of the tournament during the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee. A CAF official also confirmed the tournament will proceed as planned in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Kenya has assured football fans that the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) will still be co-hosted by the country, despite rumours suggesting that the nation may lose its hosting rights due to delays in preparing the required facilities.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen addressed the concerns during a press conference on the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee for both CHAN 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. Murkomen stressed that hosting these major tournaments is a significant opportunity for Kenya to improve its sporting infrastructure and raise the country's profile globally.

"We are taking a major step today in preparing for these tournaments," Murkomen said. "The inauguration of this committee is a key part of ensuring we host successful events that will inspire the next generation of athletes."
The newly formed committee is composed of experts in sports administration, media, and event management, with representation from the government, private sector, and sports organisations. Murkomen challenged the committee to deliver the best editions of the two tournaments in history, promising that resources will be used efficiently to ensure success.
"We are working tirelessly to ensure that Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani is ready for CHAN 2024 in February. Nyayo Stadium and the training facilities are also nearing completion," Murkomen added.
Kabelo Bosilong, CAF's Host Country Manager for Kenya, was present at the event and took the opportunity to confirm that the tournament will take place in the three countries that won the bids - Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda - despite the misleading reports circulating on social media.
"There's been a lot of false information regarding the location of this tournament," Bosilong said. "But I can confirm that CHAN 2024 will take place in the countries that were chosen."
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed also expressed confidence that the government would deliver on the hosting commitments for both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027. He emphasised the importance of both tournaments not only for the Harambee Stars but for the future of Kenyan football.
"We must ensure that our team is fully prepared for these competitions," Mohammed said. "I also urge the corporate sector to support this journey as we work to make Kenya a sporting powerhouse in the region."
The Local Organising Committee will now focus on finalising preparations for the events, with less than three months until the opening of CHAN 2024.
