Security agencies announce stringent measures ahead of Easter festivities along Kenyan Coastline

Beaches along Kenya’s coastline will be closed to the public from 6 pm daily throughout the Easter holiday period as part of a raft of security measures unveiled by authorities to ensure the safety of residents and tourists.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno, flanked by senior officers from various agencies, announced the measures in Mombasa, citing the need for heightened vigilance and proactive planning as thousands of travellers are expected to flock to the region for Easter celebrations.

“With the holiday coming, we have come up with strategies and plans to ensure the seamless transfer of travellers and guests who will be coming. This is a tourist destination, so we want to assure the community and tourists that the Coast is safe and secure. Therefore, come and enjoy your holidays,” said Ali.

Ali confirmed that police presence will be intensified across the region, with officers strategically deployed to enforce law and order.

“We have allocation orders in place, and our officers will be moving across the region. Normally, 80% of accidents are attributed to human error, which includes drunk driving, fatigue, or driver negligence. I want to advise long-distance travellers to ensure they have two drivers per vehicle,” he added.

In addition to road safety, the regional police commander warned beachgoers to vacate the shores by 6 pm as part of the curfew imposed on beaches.

“We have enough deployment at the beaches. I advise people to leave by 6 pm. We will not allow road carnages or beach-related incidents in our region,” he said.

Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Noor echoed these sentiments, revealing the formation of a multi-agency task force composed of security personnel and officials from county governments to oversee the smooth execution of the plan.

“We have formed a multi-agency team, including people from county governments to ensure our people are safe and to ensure smooth traffic flow. Those coming to the Coast for Easter, we assure them of their safety, and they will return safely,” said Mohamed.

He noted that various officers would be deployed to the beaches, including Assistant County Commissioners (ACC), Officers Commanding Stations (OCS), and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel.

“There will be whistles blown at the beaches to signal everyone to leave. We will not allow people to be at the beaches past 6 pm. The multi-agency team will work closely to ensure everyone leaves on time,” he stated.

Meanwhile, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Board non-executive Chairperson Khatib Mwashetani stressed the importance of road safety during the busy holiday period.

“We have a lot of accidents, and without planning, we will face the same scenarios we have been facing. Starting this Wednesday, we are going to the ground to ensure every law under the Traffic Act and NTSA regulations is enforced,” Mwashetani stated.

He highlighted key highways that will be closely monitored, including the Mombasa-Kilifi and Mombasa-Lamu routes, as well as the Mombasa-Nairobi corridor.

Security agencies in the Coast region have vowed to protect Kenyans and visitors alike during the Easter festivities, urging the public to cooperate fully with the directives to ensure a peaceful and incident-free holiday.
