Gachagua alleges ongoing construction at the disputed Laikipia Air Base Ebola facility and insists journalists must be allowed in to verify the true status despite a court-ordered halt.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for media access to Laikipia Air Base to verify the status of the disputed Ebola quarantine and isolation facility, alleging that construction-related activities are continuing despite a court order and government assurances that the project has been halted.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, Gachagua accused the government of concealing the true status of the project and insisted that independent verification by journalists was the only way to establish what is happening on the ground.
“We want that airbase opened for the press to go and confirm whether the construction is going on or not,” he said.

Gachagua further claimed that work linked to the proposed facility was ongoing despite a High Court order maintaining the status quo and halting any establishment or operationalisation of the project pending further court directions. He alleged that heavy construction activity was still taking place in the Nanyuki area, including trucks ferrying building materials to the site.
“I heard Duale saying they will obey the court order. That is a lie. That thing is ongoing,” he said.

His remarks come even as Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has maintained that the government will comply with the court order stopping the establishment of the facility. Duale has also stressed that Kenya remains committed to the rule of law while continuing broader public health preparedness measures under existing legal frameworks.

He also claimed the controversial facility had already attracted international concern, alleging that Kenyan travellers were facing restrictions linked to Ebola preparedness plans.
The dispute centres on a proposed Ebola exposure, quarantine, isolation, and treatment facility reportedly planned at Laikipia Air Base.
The High Court issued conservatory orders maintaining the status quo, effectively barring any progress pending further hearings.
