Dry week ahead, isolated rains expected in highlands and coast - Kenya Met

Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Eastern Lowlands, the Rift Valley and North Eastern Kenya.

Most parts of Kenya are expected to remain dry between June 16 and June 22, although rainfall is likely in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Coast and North Eastern Kenya.
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), in its latest forecast, noted that while dry conditions will dominate across most regions, several areas will still experience occasional showers alongside periods of cool and cloudy weather.
Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Eastern Lowlands, the Rift Valley and North Eastern Kenya.
Daytime average temperatures are projected to rise above 30°C in sections of the Coast, the South eastern Lowlands, North eastern and North western Kenya, while night-time temperatures are expected to drop below 10°C in some areas of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and around Mt. Kilimanjaro.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley covering Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day with partly cloudy nights. However, afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms may occur in a few places.

North-western Kenya, covering Turkana and Samburu counties, is expected to remain mostly sunny during the day with partly cloudy nights.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties, mornings are likely to be cloudy with occasional rain in a few areas before sunny intervals develop later in the day.
“Nights will be partly cloudy, with chances of afternoon and night showers in some places,” KMD stated.
In North Eastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day with partly cloudy nights. However, morning rains and afternoon showers may occur in a few areas.
The South Eastern Lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, are expected to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights, though isolated morning rains and afternoon showers may occur.
At the Coast, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties, as well as the Tana Delta, sunny intervals are expected during the day with partly cloudy nights; however, morning, afternoon and night showers may occur in a few places.
In its temperature outlook, the department said  Lodwar is expected to record a maximum of 36°C and a minimum of 25°C, while Garissa will range between 23°C and 35°C. Wajir is forecast to range between 22°C and 34°C.
Mombasa is expected to range between 23°C and 31°C, Nairobi between 13°C and 26°C, Kisumu between 17°C and 30°C, Nakuru between 11°C and 28°C, and Nyahururu between 4°C and 24°C.
In its weather review for June 8 to June 14, 2026, the Department noted that most parts of the country remained dry, with rainfall recorded only in a few areas of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the Coast.
“The highest seven-day rainfall total of 23.3mm was recorded at Bungoma Water Supply Rainfall Station, which also recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall amount of 23.3mm on June 14, 2026,” KMD said.
The review shows that rainfall amounts declined across the country compared to the period between June 1 and June 7, 2026.
On temperature trends, daytime readings increased in stations such as Mombasa, Kisii and Mtwapa, while decreases were recorded in Marsabit, Moyale and Lodwar. Night temperatures increased in Lamu, Msabaha and Suba but dropped in Kitale, Eldoret and Narok among other stations.
Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.2°C on June 9, 2026, while Nyahururu recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of 4.4°C on June 10, 2026. The same stations also recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperature of 37.1°C and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature of 5.3°C.
