SUPKEM warns against return to 2007-style political violence after All Saints’ Cathedral attack by goons
SUPKEM has condemned the attack on All Saints' Cathedral, warning that failure to hold those behind the violence accountable could embolden further assaults on religious institutions and deepen political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has condemned an attack carried out at All Saints' Cathedral during a post-budget analysis meeting, calling for urgent investigations and firm action against those responsible.
In a statement on Monday, SUPKEM National Chairman Hassan Ole Naado warned that such acts threaten religious freedom and national stability.
He noted that the nature of the incident could point to possible backing from influential individuals, insisting that those involved must be identified and prosecuted.
"What is most troubling is the boldness with which assailants stormed the meeting room, intent on inflicting serious harm on participants. Even more alarming is their attack on the church sanctuary, fully aware that the premises are under constant police protection. This indicates that the attackers likely had backing from influential figures within the government," Hassan said.
The council also pointed to CCTV footage as key evidence, saying it would assist investigators in tracking down the perpetrators and those who may have supported the operation.
CCTV footage reviewed by investigators showed the attack began at about 9:39 am, when motorbikes carrying two to three men forced entry into the cathedral grounds. The group clashed with security guards at the entrance before moving into the compound.

Police officers responded and managed to push the attackers back toward Valley Road around 9:44 am. During the retreat, the group allegedly robbed pedestrians along Kenyatta Avenue.
At about 10:11 am, the attackers reportedly returned on foot after abandoning their motorcycles. They entered the compound and proceeded to the conference section, where the post-budget forum was ongoing.
Five men were later seen on the second floor, allegedly robbing participants in the lobby area.
One victim was overpowered while trying to escape to the third floor, while another was cornered as officers attempted to intervene.
The group reportedly chanted slogans as they disrupted the meeting, forcing a temporary halt to proceedings.
Outside the cathedral, a gunshot was fired in what appeared to be an effort to disperse the attackers as the situation escalated.
SUPKEM warned that failure to act decisively could embolden further attacks on religious institutions across the country.
It drew parallels with past political tensions, cautioning that the timing of such incidents ahead of the 2027 general elections should not be ignored.
The council warned against allowing Kenya to slide back into the kind of divisions experienced during the period leading up to the 2007 elections and the 2008 post-election violence.
SUPKEM also emphasised that the attack represented a violation of religious freedom influenced by intolerant political interests, urging authorities to act with urgency, transparency, and firmness. It also called for political restraint and tolerance as the country moves closer to the next election cycle.
On Sunday, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing. They noted that CCTV footage is being reviewed and that two suspects are already in custody as part of the probe.
The NPS further urged members of the public to share any information that may assist investigations, assuring that the case will be handled thoroughly and impartially.
“This incident will be investigated thoroughly, professionally, transparently, and impartially to ensure all those involved are brought to justice,” the police said, adding that updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
