Governor Nyong’o condemns Chemelil Academy attack, calls for gang crackdown

According to police reports, the school’s principal, Abisai Samora, raised the alarm through a distress call, alerting police officers that the institution was under attack.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has condemned the attack on Chemelil Academy by a group of youths, describing it as a “barbaric act of lawlessness” and calling for a crackdown on suspected gang networks in the area following the arrest of three suspects.
In a statement, Nyong’o termed it an assault on education and public order, saying educational institutions must remain safe spaces for learning and warning that those behind the attack would be identified and prosecuted.
"That young men, endowed with energy and the capacity to earn an honest living, can be mobilised to terrorise parents, teachers, education officials and service providers within a learning institution in broad daylight is both shameful and unacceptable," the governor stated.
Nyong’o said he had held consultations with County Commissioner Mohammed Ramadhan Mwabudzo and security leadership over what he described as a growing threat of organised criminal gangs and “goonism” in Kisumu County. He added that the county government and security agencies were united in efforts to dismantle such networks and restore public confidence and safety.
The incident occurred on the morning of June 18, 2026, when armed suspects wielding crude weapons stormed the school in Muhoroni sub-county as students were returning from their half-term break.
