Healthcare boost as Kilifi County Referral Hospital upgraded to Level 5 status

The development is also expected to reduce the number of patients referred to hospitals outside Kilifi County for specialised care.

Kilifi County Referral Hospital has been elevated to Level 5 status, a move expected to strengthen healthcare services in the county and expand access to specialised treatment for residents.
The upgrade places the facility among Kenya's higher-level referral hospitals, enabling it to handle more complex medical cases and offer a broader range of services.
The development is also expected to reduce the number of patients referred to hospitals outside Kilifi County for specialised care.
Announcing the development, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro said the new status reflects efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and service delivery within the county.
"The elevation of Kilifi County Referral Hospital to Level 5 status marks a major milestone in our journey towards transforming healthcare for the people of Kilifi," Mung’aro said.

He added that the county government had been investing in strengthening health systems and increasing access to specialised medical services closer to where residents live.
The governor said the elevation would support the county's efforts to improve healthcare outcomes by enhancing the hospital's capacity to provide treatment and manage referrals.
Kilifi North MP Owen Baya also welcomed the upgrade, congratulating the hospital's management and medical staff for their role in attaining the new classification.
Baya specifically recognised Medical Superintendent Dr Angore and the hospital team, describing the elevation as an important development for healthcare services in Kilifi and the wider Coast region.
The hospital serves thousands of patients from Kilifi and neighbouring counties and serves as the county's main referral facility.
Its elevation to Level 5 status is expected to increase its role in providing specialised treatment, supporting county health services and improving access to care for patients who previously had to travel long distances to seek advanced medical attention.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by county governments across Kenya to strengthen public healthcare facilities and improve access to specialised medical services at the regional level.
The elevation places Kilifi County Referral Hospital in the same Level 5 category as Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa. However, the two facilities differ in size, capacity and the range of specialised services they offer.
