The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has clarified that instant traffic fines cannot be paid through the eCitizen platform, directing motorists to make payments in person at KCB Bank branches or authorised KCB agents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Authority said the clarification was intended to curb misinformation and protect motorists from fraud as the implementation of instant traffic fines continues.
NTSA said that although eCitizen remains the official payment gateway for government services and the Authority is one of its largest users, instant traffic fines are not processed through the platform.
"Instant fines are not paid through the eCitizen platform," the authority said.
It added, "Payments for instant fines must be made physically to the NTSA account at Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) branches or KCB agents. This decision is informed by reports of numerous SMS scams targeting motorists with fake fine payment demands."
According to the Authority, requiring motorists to pay at KCB branches or agents provides an additional layer of verification, helping to prevent social engineering fraud.
"Requiring in-person bank payments adds a critical verification layer to the payment process. This avoids social engineering fraud," the statement said.
NTSA further clarified that legitimate instant fine notifications are sent only through its official shortcode, 22847_NTSA, and contain details of the traffic offence, the applicable penalty and payment instructions.
The Authority urged motorists to verify the source of any payment notification before making any payments to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
"Members of the public are strongly advised to always verify the source of any notification before making any payment," NTSA said.
The Authority said the clarification is meant to counter misinformation while supporting the smooth implementation of road safety measures. It also advised the public to seek accurate information through its official communication channels or the NTSA website.
