Police in Garissa have stepped up security operations following a rise in phone snatching and robberies involving criminals using motorbikes, leading to the arrest of several suspects in separate operations over the past two days.
The latest arrest involved 21-year-old Hamza Abdi Dagane, who had been on the run after failing to appear before the Garissa Law Courts, where he faces robbery with violence charges.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested the suspect after tracking him to the Bulla Medina area of Garissa Township through an intelligence-led operation.
According to the DCI, Hamza is facing two robbery with violence cases before the Garissa Law Courts. A warrant for his arrest had been issued after he failed to appear in court on June 29, 2026, prompting detectives to begin a search for him.
Investigators said the suspect had gone into hiding in an attempt to evade arrest before detectives located and apprehended him. He is expected to be arraigned on Thursday, July 9, to answer to the robbery with violence charges.
The arrest comes at a time when residents of Garissa have raised concerns over rising cases of phone snatching and robberies involving criminals operating on motorbikes, with security agencies responding by increasing patrols and intelligence-led operations across the town.
In a statement, the DCI said it remains committed to ensuring that suspects who attempt to evade justice are brought before the courts.
“The DCI remains steadfast in ensuring that individuals who seek to evade the criminal justice system are tracked, apprehended, and presented before the courts to answer for their alleged offences,” DCI said.
The latest operation follows another security crackdown conducted on Wednesday in Garissa Town, where police arrested three suspects and recovered assorted crude weapons during an intelligence-led operation.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation targeted the group believed to be behind the spate of criminal activity within the town. Police said the suspects were part of a larger group, while several other members managed to escape during the operation and remain at large.
Security officers have since launched a search for the remaining suspects as investigations continue to establish the group’s activities and identify other people believed to be linked to the planned crimes.
Police said the recovery of crude weapons during the operation was part of efforts to disrupt criminal activities before they could be carried out. Investigators are also examining whether the suspects are connected to other reported incidents within Garissa and nearby areas.
The two operations are part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle criminal networks operating in different parts of the country, including groups involved in robberies, illegal weapons and organised crime.
