The registration of boda boda operators in Mtwapa has been stepped up as police move to improve security and tighten oversight of the transport sector following concerns over crimes targeting riders and the misuse of motorcycles in criminal activities.
Officer Commanding Mtwapa Police Station (OCS) Chris Nyamawi led a series of security forums with boda boda operators, accompanied by the area chief, assistant chief and other local administrators.
The meetings were held at Kwa Chief, Mzambarauni and National Bank boda boda stages, where officers discussed security concerns, road safety and the role of riders in supporting efforts to curb crime.
Nyamawi called on operators to work closely with law enforcement by promptly reporting suspicious people and activities, saying boda boda riders are well placed to provide information because of their daily interaction with the public.
He urged riders to remain alert while carrying out their work and to prioritise their own safety as well as that of their passengers.

The OCS also directed all operators to register officially and display unique identification numbers. Under the new arrangement, every registered rider will be attached to a specific boda boda stage and issued with an identification number to make it easier to verify their identity.
According to Nyamawi, the initiative is intended to improve accountability within the sector and make it easier for security agencies to trace riders whenever the need arises.
He said the lack of a proper identification system has made it difficult for authorities to distinguish genuine operators from those working outside the law, creating security concerns for both riders and members of the public.
The registration exercise comes amid rising concern over a new wave of criminal incidents targeting boda boda operators in Mtwapa.
Representatives of the boda boda sector welcomed the initiative and pledged to cooperate with police by complying with the new registration requirements and supporting efforts aimed at improving security.
The exercise is also expected to bring greater order to the boda boda industry, which remains a key mode of transport within Mtwapa despite operating for years with limited regulation.
