Three suspects were arrested and assorted crude weapons recovered in Garissa Town on Wednesday after police carried out an intelligence‑led operation targeting a group reportedly planning to commit criminal offences. Six other suspects escaped and are being pursued.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Garissa Police Station conducted the operation on July 8 in the Bulla Sagarey area after receiving intelligence about the activities of a group of nine people. Police said the operation led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly found in possession of crude weapons.
The NPS said the suspects were part of a larger group that had planned to engage in criminal activities within the area. During the operation, some members resisted arrest and confronted officers, causing injuries among police personnel, before six suspects managed to flee.
Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing as officers intensify efforts to trace and arrest the remaining suspects. Those already in custody are expected to be presented in court to face charges linked to the incident.
"Police are pursuing the suspects who evaded arrest, while those taken into custody are due to be arraigned in court to face relevant charges," the Service said in a statement.
The recovery of crude weapons forms part of ongoing security operations aimed at preventing crime and responding to intelligence reports received from the public and other agencies.
Police have not disclosed the specific types of weapons recovered or the offences they believe the group intended to commit, saying investigations are still underway.
The latest operation comes as security agencies step up efforts against criminal networks across the country, including those linked to illegal weapons and organised crime. The police maintain that intelligence‑led operations remain vital in identifying suspects before criminal activities occur.
The Garissa operation follows the arrest of a man suspected of playing a key role in the illegal firearms trade across several counties. The suspect, Kassim Kulicha, was arrested at the Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint in Kitui County while travelling to Nairobi.
According to the NPS, investigators have linked him to the sale and distribution of illegal firearms and ammunition in Tana River, Isiolo, Meru and Garissa counties. Police said the arrest disrupted a supply chain believed to be intended for criminal activities in Nairobi and surrounding areas.
Security agencies continue to monitor the movement of illegal firearms and criminal groups across different regions as part of wider efforts to improve public safety.
They have urged members of the public to share information that could assist investigations and help officers identify suspects involved in planned criminal activities.
